Olukemi Olufunto “Kemi” Badenoch (née Adegoke) is a British politician who currently serves as the Leader of the Conservative Party and the Leader of the Opposition in the UK Parliament. A highly influential figure known for her outspoken libertarian and anti-“woke” views, she made history in November 2024 by becoming the first Black person to lead a major political party in the United Kingdom.

Early Life and Professional Career

  • Nigerian Roots: Badenoch was born in Wimbledon, London, to Nigerian parents: her father, Femi Adegoke, was a general practitioner, and her mother, Feyi Adubifa, was a professor of physiology. She spent parts of her childhood in Lagos, Nigeria, and the United States, where her family encountered economic and political instability. She has often spoken about doing her homework by candlelight in Nigeria, an experience that heavily shaped her political and free-market philosophy.

  • Return to the UK: At the age of 16, she returned to the UK, working part-time at McDonald’s to support herself while studying for her A Levels.

  • Engineering and Finance: She studied Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Sussex, graduating in 2003. She then worked as a software engineer at Logica before moving into the financial services sector as a systems analyst at RBS and later as an Associate Director at the private bank Coutts & Co. She also completed a part-time Law degree (LLB) from Birkbeck, University of London, in 2009.


Political Ascendancy and Cabinet Roles

  • Entry into Politics: Badenoch joined the Conservative Party in 2005. She was first elected to public office as a member of the London Assembly in 2015.

  • Member of Parliament: She was elected as the MP for Saffron Walden (now North West Essex) in the 2017 General Election. She supported the UK’s departure from the European Union (Brexit).

  • Ministerial Positions: Badenoch rapidly rose through the ministerial ranks, serving in various junior and senior government roles, including:
